Autumn Term

During this term students will develop knowledge and understanding of the key body systems and how they impact on health, fitness and performance in physical activity and sport.  Students will also develop knowledge and understanding of the benefits of participating in physical activity and sport to health, fitness and wellbeing.

·         AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport.

·         AO2: Apply knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport.

·         AO3: Analyse and evaluate the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport.

·         AO4: Demonstrate and apply relevant skills and techniques in physical activity and sport.  Analyse and evaluate performance.

Spring Term

During this term students will develop knowledge and understanding of the key body systems and how they impact on health, fitness and performance in physical activity and sport.

Summer Term

During this term students will develop knowledge and understanding of the key body systems and how they impact on health, fitness and performance in physical activity and sport.  Students will also develop knowledge and understanding of the psychological factors that can affect performers in physical activity and sport.  Students will also start analysing their own performance as part of the non-examined assessment component of the course.

Autumn Term

During this term students will develop knowledge and understanding of the key body systems and how they impact on health, fitness and performance in physical activity and sport.  Students will also continue to develop their non-examined assessment as they evaluate possible causes and corrections of previously identified weaknesses.

·         AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport.

·         AO2: Apply knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport.

·         AO3: Analyse and evaluate the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport.

·         AO4: Demonstrate and apply relevant skills and techniques in physical activity and sport.  Analyse and evaluate performance.

Spring Term

During this term students will develop knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of movement and

their effect on performance in physical activity and sport.  Students will also develop knowledge and understanding of the psychological factors that can affect performers in physical activity and sport.   Students will also master practical performance tasks as part of their assessed practical moderation.

Summer Term

During this term students will develop knowledge and understanding of the socio-cultural factors that impact on

physical activity and sport, and the impact of sport on society, before the final preparations are underway for their GCSE PE examinations.

Which exam board will students be examined by?

AQA

How are groups organised?

We organise classes by mixed ability.  The students have five one-hour lessons per fortnight.

What characteristics does a successful student have in this subject?

The most successful students in this subject will enjoy learning about the theoretical aspects of physical education and the human body.  This must be underpinned by a passion for working practically and trying many different sports.

How will students learn at this level?

How will students’ learning be assessed at this level?

Paper 1 is comprised of the following units:

Applied anatomy and physiology

Movement analysis

Physical training

Use of data

Paper 1 is assessed through a 1 hour and 15 minute exam.  This is worth 30% of your final mark.

Paper 2 is comprised of the following units:

Sport psychology

Socio-cultural influences

Health, fitness and well-being

Use of data

Paper 2 is assessed through a 1 hour and 15 minute exam.  This is worth 30% of your final mark.

 

NEA – coursework

This is assessed by a written assignment and is worth 10% of your final mark.

NEA – practical

This is assessed throughout the course, with marks being finalised during a one day moderation from an external examiner.  Students will be assessed in their physical competency across 3 different sports.  Sports must be from the agreed list.  This is worth 30% of your final mark.

When do key assessments take place?

Practical moderation is sometime in March/April.

Written exams are usually in May.

How can parents/carers support students’ learning?

Encourage your child to work on google docs, attempt additional questions from the homework booklet (which they should answer, mark and correct themselves), watch additional tutorial videos from various providers on youtube, attend one GCSE PE support session a week, purchase PE specific revision/teaching resources and ask for help if they are unsure.

This course will allow your child to have many career options and not just one associated to sport/physical activity.

How does this subject support a broad and balanced curriculum, meeting the needs of all students, and developing traditional core skills?

This subject links to a wide range of other subjects.  It is where students can apply their knowledge. 

We have mixed ability classes, so students gain teacher and peer support. In addition, students can show a range of abilities through practical and written work.

Traditional core written skills are applied during the coursework and extended writing tasks within the exams.

How does this subject promote creativity, critical thinking, practice, perseverance and resilience, and making links?

Through the design, implementation and evaluation of your performance in a game situation (coursework).

 Students will practise practical skills throughout the duration of the course and use resilience frequently to master content and develop their skills.

 Links are made between a multitude of subjects.  As already indicated.

How does this subject encourage enrichment and the development of cultural capital, deep learning, and inclusivity?

Enrichment and Cultural understanding is embedded within specific topics; participation rates and factors which impact participation.

Deep learning is prevalent within this course; mastery learning strategies are used to ensure students are confident with the content.  Students also have to regularly apply their knowledge and understanding to a variety of different scenarios. 

This subject is inclusive of all students from all backgrounds.  This helps to enrich discussions.
