Each year the School receives additional funding to help the learning of students who receive or have received free school meals or who are in the care of the local authority. This is called the Pupil Premium. The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011 in order to narrow the achievement gap between disadvantaged students and their non-disadvantaged classmates.

Statement of intent
While rapid progress, demonstrated for example by a high individual Progress 8 score, may be important and celebrated, students’ access to future opportunities, either in education or employment, are largely dictated by their grades at the end of Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5. Therefore, it is our intention that we will not only close the progress gap between our disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged students, but that our disadvantaged students will make greater progress than their non-disadvantaged classmates, so that we will also begin to reduce the attainment gap.
The core of our strategy is guaranteeing all students’ entitlement to a high-quality education. This means:
- ensuring that students are in school as frequently as possible;
- reducing the impact of negative behaviour on learning;
- effective curriculum design, that is responsive to students’ knowledge and understanding, and challenges and supports all students to learn;
- responsive pastoral care, which identifies and seeks to eliminate or reduce barriers to learning at the earliest opportunity;
- quality-first teaching, that is responsive to the needs of individual students, as this is shown to be the most effective lever with which any school can improve outcomes for disadvantaged students.
This strategy links to our wider approach in addressing the educational recovery, necessary in the context of the pandemic. In addition to the activities detailed in this strategy, many of our disadvantaged students will benefit from school-led tuition, which will be targeted at those students whose education has been most affected by lockdowns and school closure.
